Halloween Safety

Halloween Is a Door-Opening Marathon. Is Your Dog's Chip Info Current?

Trick-or-treat night means a steady stream of doorbells and open doors. Door escapes are one of the classic Halloween risks for dogs.

Here's the encouraging part. In a 2012 ASPCA-led national phone survey, about 14% of dogs had been lost in the prior five years, and 93% of those were recovered.

How they got home matters. 49% came back through a neighborhood search, 15% through a tag or microchip, and 6% through animal control.

Chips do help. A 2009 JAVMA study of 7,704 microchipped animals at 53 US shelters found microchipped dogs were returned to owners 52.2% of the time, versus 21.9% of dogs without a chip.

The main reason chipped pets didn't get home was incorrect or missing owner contact information.

It doesn't mean a microchip is a tracker. It means a chip is only as useful as the phone number attached to it.

Try this: Before Saturday, look up your dog's chip registration and confirm your current phone number. Check that the tag is readable and the collar is secure. During trick-or-treating, I'd put a nervous dog in a separate room or behind a baby gate or exercise pen.

Halo Collar 5 ($125 OFF)

Halloween means a lot of open doors. The Halo Collar is a GPS collar that lets you set up a virtual boundary in the app and get an alert when your dog leaves it.

Why it's worth it: It adds a layer of protection for the dog who treats an open door like an invitation. I've tested Halo Collar 3, 4 and 5 in sequence, so I know the line well.

Myth Buster

Quick myth to bust: Fresh dog food isn't just about making your dog's dinner look more appetizing. Properly formulated fresh meals can provide complete and balanced nutrition, just like traditional kibble. The important thing isn't whether food comes from a bag or a refrigerator, but whether it meets your dog's nutritional needs.

The Farmer’s Dog (60% Off)

Want to see what fresh food is all about? The Farmer's Dog delivers fresh, pre-portioned meals made with real ingredients and tailored to your dog's individual needs. It's a convenient way to try fresh feeding without having to figure out recipes or portions yourself (or turn your kitchen into a dog food factory).

Furry Fact: Big Dogs Really Do Age Faster, and Scientists Found a Clue in Their DNA

We've always known that bigger dogs tend to have shorter lifespans than smaller ones, but now scientists are getting a better idea of why. A new study published in Science on October 8 looked at blood samples from 894 dogs and found that larger breeds showed signs of faster aging at the DNA level. Researchers suspect it may have something to do with how quickly big dogs grow, although that's still just a theory.

Speaking of DNA, ever wonder what your own dog's genes might reveal about their breed, health and potential risks for inherited conditions?

Embark Breed + Health ($20 Off)

Your dog's DNA holds some pretty interesting secrets (and we're not just talking about why they insist on barking at the same tree every day).

The Embark Breed + Health Test helps you discover your dog's breed mix and screen for hundreds of genetic health risks, giving you more information to discuss with your vet.
